North and South Korean Leaders Meet at DMZ

Historic Summit Yields Pledge for Complete Denuclearization

In a historic meeting at the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separates North and South Korea, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in pledged to work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The summit, which took place on April 27, 2018, marked the first time a North Korean leader had crossed the border into South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953. The two leaders met at the Truce Village of Panmunjom, where they signed a joint declaration that outlined their commitment to denuclearization, peace, and reconciliation.

The declaration stated that the two Koreas would work to establish a "permanent and solid peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula and to "completely denuclearize" the peninsula. The leaders also agreed to set up a joint liaison office in the border town of Kaesong and to hold regular high-level talks.

The summit was hailed as a major breakthrough in relations between the two Koreas, which have been tense for decades. The United States and other countries welcomed the outcome of the summit and pledged to support the two Koreas in their efforts to achieve denuclearization and peace.
